| Pigeon
Island National Landmark represents the cultural and historical changes
in St. Lucia's history. Located in the north west of the island. This
beautiful island reserve covers 44 acres. Originally an island surrounded
by water, Pigeon Island was joined to the mainland in 1972 with the construction

1979, Pigeon Island is now a protected area in which visitors and locals
can learn about and enjoy the rich history and beauty of the reserve. |

Pigeon
Island was first occupied by the Amerindians, mainly Caribs. The island
was later occupied by pirates whose leader was a Norman Captain called
Francois Le Clerc. He had a wooden leg and was known to the French as
Jambe de Bois. He would sneak out and attack the passing Spanish, French
and English ships! There is now a restaurant named in his honour on the
island! |

| In
1778, the French, as owners of the island declared war on the British.
The British retaliated by attacking them in St.Lucia and capturing the
island, building a Naval Base at Gros Islet Bay and heavily fortifying
Pigeon Island. From that vantage point, they were able to monitor the
French fleet in Martinique. In 1782, they defeated of the French at the
Battle of the Saints . Pigeon Island changed hands 14 times between the
English and French before finally being won by the English. Remains of
the guns, forts, barracks and kitchens are all over the island and a museum
now gives unique insight into how the island was controlled and it's importance
to the development of St. Lucia. |
